Teenagers can usually choose between metal braces and clear aligners for private treatment. The orthodontist will tell you which options suit your teeth.
Metal braces
- Fixed to the teeth, so they work all the time.
- Checked every 8 to 10 weeks.
- Available on the health service (NHS) if your child qualifies, or privately.
Smartee clear aligners
- Worn 20 to 22 hours a day. We recommend the 30-minute rule: never have them out of your mouth for more than 30 minutes at a time.
- Change to the next set once a week at home.
- Private only – not available on the health service.
The cost
For under-18s, private braces or Smartee clear aligners cost £2,900 with our under-18s offer (usually £3,900) while the patient is under 18. You can pay a £900 deposit, then the rest in 12 monthly payments. A £150 plan fee is added to the balance and spread across your monthly payments. See private braces for under-18s.
Some younger children need a removable brace or Twin Block first. These are worn 20 to 22 hours a day, and never out for more than 30 minutes at a time. See braces and Twin Block.
